Southampton was subdivided for houses, and houses are nearly all of it, so the beds on these blocks are private front doors rather than hotel desks. Macklind Avenue is the exception. Its business strip runs from Devonshire Avenue south to Eichelberger Street with bakeries, delis and storefront restaurants.
Chippewa Street and South Kingshighway Boulevard keep the through traffic out on the rim, and the Hampton Village shopping strip sits on the Hampton Avenue boundary. Take the room in central St. Louis; you get a quiet street in Southampton and a short walk to Macklind Avenue.

What are the main landmarks in Southampton?
Southampton keeps its landmarks on the street rather than in a park. The Macklind Avenue Business District is the first of them, a strip that runs the depth of the neighborhood from Devonshire Avenue down to Eichelberger Street. St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church stands at the Kingshighway end on Bancroft Avenue, its parish school beside it.
Hope Lutheran Church holds a corner on Neosho Street. Buder Elementary School takes a block of Lansdowne Avenue. The parks sit outside the rim.

What is the history of Southampton?
Southampton was farm and estate ground, rural through the nineteenth century, and its first houses went up around 1905. The name came from England. The developer who platted the subdivision called it for an English town and matched the streets, which is why Devonshire Avenue, Lansdowne Avenue and Nottingham Avenue read like an English gazetteer.
Streetcar service reached the loop at Macklind Avenue and Devonshire Avenue early in the twentieth century, and a business strip followed. Neither of the cinemas on its record survives: the Roxy Theater on Lansdowne Avenue and the Avalon Cinema on South Kingshighway Boulevard were both pulled down.
