Walnut Park East was farm ground into the late 1890s. Then the rail lines came. Small industries gathered along them at the south end and gave the first houses their reason to be, and the blocks filled slowly, a process that ran on into the 1950s.
German families led the settlement and were joined by others of European stock, working people who raised their own houses with help from neighbours and relatives. The Board of Education ended years of portable classrooms in 1909 with the Walnut Park School on Thekla Avenue. Northwest High School opened at 5140 Riverview Boulevard in February 1964.
