What is the history of Williamsburg?
It was its own city once. Williamsburg stood independent until 1855, when Brooklyn annexed it and the spelling lost its final letter, turning Williamsburgh into the shorter form used since. Brooklyn is a borough of New York City, and Williamsburg sits inside it as one neighborhood among many, bounded by Greenpoint, Bushwick, East Williamsburg, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.
The southern end kept its own name. South Williamsburg refers to the ground along the East River below Division Avenue, a label that stuck long after the independent city disappeared.
