What are the main landmarks in Carthage?
The Hamilton County Fairgrounds cover about 30 acres off Anthony Wayne Avenue, fronted by Vine Street and less than a mile from Interstate 75. The county fair has run there since the 1850s, when it was still called the Carthage Fair. One corner does the rest.
A tall painted sign of a Native American chieftain went up where Paddock Road meets Vine Street in 1954, advertising a car lot on a strip once thick with dealerships.
What is the history of Carthage?
Captain Jacob White came up from Redstone in Pennsylvania and raised a log blockhouse here in 1791 or 1792, naming it White's Station. A party of Native Americans attacked the station on the 19th of October, 1793. Farms followed the blockhouse.
The Hamilton County Agricultural Society formed in 1819 under William Henry Harrison, and its fair settled onto ground here while Carthage was still its own village, incorporated in 1868 and not annexed by Cincinnati until 1911. Hispanic migration reshaped the Vine Street storefronts from the 1990s onward.
