Corryville gathers its landmarks on Short Vine, the block of Vine Street that carries the neighborhood's shopfronts. Bogart's stands at 2621 Short Vine Street. The room opened in 1905 as the Nordland Plaza Nickelodeon, a vaudeville house that later screened German films before becoming a music hall in the 1970s.
Mecklenburg Gardens sits east of it, at 302 East University Avenue. A walled garden of grapevine trellises lies behind the Italianate brick building, which went up around 1865 and entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
What is the history of Corryville?
Corryville carries the name of William Corry, mayor of Cincinnati from 1815 to 1819 and a landowner on this hillside. Jacob Burnet and William McMillan held parts of the ground before him. German families climbed out of the crowded Over-the-Rhine basin to settle the village, which Cincinnati annexed in 1870.
Cincinnati General Hospital arrived in 1915. The hospitals that followed it named the northern half Pill Hill, while university expansion in the 1960s put the University Plaza shopping center along Vine Street and pushed through traffic onto Jefferson Avenue.
