Frederick W. Garber drew the plans. Building began in 1933 under the Public Works Administration and Laurel Homes opened in 1938 with just over thirteen hundred flats, which made it the second largest project of its kind in the country. Lincoln Court opened alongside it in 1942.
Twenty-nine buildings were listed in 1987.
What is the history of Laurel Homes Historic District?
Laurel Homes was nominally integrated. It was among the first such projects in the United States to be so, while Lincoln Court, opened four years later with a little over a thousand flats, was built for Black families alone. All but three of the buildings came down between 2000 and 2002.
