What is Heyuan known for?

Thousands of fossil eggs unearthed around Heyuan earned the city its official title as the Hometown of the Dinosaur in China, and the fossil beds and collections that go with them draw visitors who would otherwise pass Northern Guangdong by. Hakka culture runs deeper. Most people here are Hakka, and the language and cooking that follow from that shape the city more than any single attraction does, including the Xinfengjiang Reservoir, the largest lake in Guangdong.

What are the main landmarks in Heyuan?

Two named sites carry the list. The Guifeng Pagoda stands as Heyuan's most recognisable structure, and the Site of the Headquarters of the Famous People's Evacuation Operation from Hong Kong marks the place from which that operation was run. Fossils are the third draw.

Dinosaur egg material unearthed around Heyuan underpins the Hometown of the Dinosaur in China title, while the Xinfengjiang Reservoir and the rainforests around it supply the natural scenery.

What is the history of Heyuan?

The name states the origin. Heyuan means origin of the river, a literal description that fixes the city's identity to water long before any modern administration arrived, and the characters 河源市 still carry it. Ho Yun is the other reading.

That romanisation appears in older references to the same city, and a traveller meeting it in print is reading about Heyuan rather than anywhere else in Guangdong. Hakka settlement is the long story. The majority of people in Heyuan are Hakka, and their arrival and spread across Northern Guangdong did more to determine where villages, fields and market towns went than any prefecture boundary later did.

One marked site survives from the twentieth century. The Site of the Headquarters of the Famous People's Evacuation Operation from Hong Kong records an episode in which Heyuan served as an inland base for people moving out of Hong Kong. Administration came later still.

Yuancheng, Dongyuan County and Zijin County were assembled into a single prefecture-level city of Guangdong, and the older Hakka geography beneath that arrangement is still legible in how the built-up ground and the outlying counties relate to one another.

Where is Heyuan?

Rivers gave the city its name. Heyuan spreads across a broad prefecture in Northern Guangdong where the Xinfengjiang Reservoir, the largest lake in Guangdong, holds back enough water to reshape the country around it. Rainforest covers much of the rest.

The built-up ground of Yuancheng and Dongyuan County occupies a small share of that territory, and Zijin County is being pulled into the same continuous urban area.

What is the climate of Heyuan?

The Xinfengjiang Reservoir keeps the air heavy. Heyuan sits in the subtropical band, so the year runs warm and wet rather than cold and dry, and the reservoir's surface together with the surrounding rainforest holds moisture in the low ground long after the rain has stopped. Cold never really settles in Heyuan.

Anyone planning around comfort is really planning around humidity, because that, not temperature, is what makes an afternoon in Northern Guangdong hard or easy.

How do you get to Heyuan?

Roads carry almost everyone. Heyuan is reached overland from elsewhere in Guangdong, and the run inland to Northern Guangdong is what separates the city from the coastal prefectures that see far more visitors. Yuancheng is where arrivals land.

The urban district holds the connections, and onward travel to Dongyuan County, Zijin County or the Xinfengjiang Reservoir is a local matter once a traveller has got that far.
