What is the history of Zhuhai?
Zhuhai grew from fishing villages by the sea. For centuries the coast was a scatter of fishing hamlets on the estuary, in the shadow of Portuguese Macau next door. Then China opened the coast.
In nineteen eighty Zhuhai was made one of the first special economic zones, and the quiet fishing shore began to fill with new streets and industry. The zone built a city of gardens. Zhuhai chose to grow green, laying out parks and a long seafront road, and it raised the bronze Fisher Girl on the shore as its emblem.
The city looked to the sea. Its bays and hundred islands drew visitors to the beaches and boats, and in our own age a vast bridge was flung across the estuary to Macau and Hong Kong, so Zhuhai kept its coast, its islands, and its gardens. The Fisher Girl still watches the bay.
