The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
The choice is between the new city and the old counties. Maoming's own centre is young and built around the petrochemical industry, so its hotels are geared to people with business at the works or the Maoming Port rather than to sightseeing. Gaozhou is the alternative.
Staying out in the county-level cities of Gaozhou, Xinyi or Huazhou puts a visitor next to the older monuments and a long way from the refineries, which is a trade most leisure travellers will take. Distance is the catch. Maoming lies 362 kilometres from Guangzhou, so a visitor who splits nights between the centre and Gaozhou spends real time on the road rather than in either place.
The sea is on the southern side. The coastal side of the prefecture is a different proposition from the ground near the works, and anyone choosing on atmosphere alone should be looking towards the South China Sea. Business travellers do the opposite.
Proximity to the Maoming Port and the refining complex is the whole point of a stay in the centre, and the hotel stock reflects that far more than it reflects the Baoguang Pagoda or Lady Xian's Grave. Neither audience is badly served.

The romanization Mowming appears in older sources beside the characters 茂名市, and both refer to a prefecture that has spent its short life defined by what it refines and ships rather than by what it inherited from Xinyi, Gaozhou or Huazhou.
Where is Maoming?
Three prefectures and a sea bound it. Maoming sits in southwestern Guangdong with Zhanjiang to the west, Yangjiang to the east and Yunfu to the northeast, while the South China Sea takes the whole southern edge. Guangzhou is far off.
The prefecture also takes in Xinyi, Gaozhou and Huazhou, which gives Maoming a shape that runs from open water to ground well back from the coast.

Distances explain the approach. Zhanjiang lies 121 kilometres from Maoming and Guangzhou is 362 kilometres off, which makes the city somewhere travellers reach on a run along southwestern Guangdong rather than as a direct trip from the provincial capital. The port handles freight.
Maoming Port is a Grade I cargo facility, so arrivals come overland from Zhanjiang, Yangjiang or Yunfu, and onward travel to Xinyi, Gaozhou and Huazhou is a local matter.
