What is the history of Heihe?
Heihe grew on the great river frontier. For ages the Oroqen and other peoples hunted the northern forests, and a trading post rose on the Amur where China faced the lands to the north. The old town stood at Aihui.
Down the river lay the old walled town of Aihui, long a frontier post on the Amur, and traders and soldiers passed through it. Trade crossed the frozen river. In winter the Amur froze so hard that carts and sledges crossed the ice to the Russian town, and goods and people passed between the two shores.
The north held its wonders. Not far off lay the volcanic lakes and springs of Wudalianchi, and the deep forests of the Khingan, and Heihe grew as the border city of the north, keeping its river, its trade, and its forests. The ice still binds the river.
