What is the history of Weifang?
Weifang has made kites and pictures for ages. On the plain of Shandong its craftsmen learned to build kites of split bamboo and painted silk, and in the village of Yangjiabu they carved woodblocks to print bright pictures for the New Year, arts handed down over many lifetimes. A famous painter once ruled here.
In the old empire the poet and painter Zheng Banqiao served as the county magistrate, and he left his mark on the town's art and gardens. The city grew on trade and craft. Weifang lay on the roads across Shandong, and merchants gathered to buy its cloth, its kites, and its prints, so the town spread on the plain.
Hard years came in the last century. A camp held foreign captives here in the great war, and the city knew famine and strife before it rose again in peace. Each spring the sky fills with kites.
