Tai'an is the city at the foot of sacred Mount Tai. The holiest of China's mountains rises straight above the town, climbed by a great stone stairway past temples and carved cliffs, and for three thousand years emperors came here to offer sacrifice to Heaven, beginning at the grand Dai Temple in the city below. Pilgrims still climb the mountain steps.

The Dai Temple stands at the foot of Mount Tai in Tai'an. The vast walled temple, where the emperors began their climb, spreads its halls and cypresses in the heart of the city, the emblem of the town, below the peak. A great stairway climbs the mountain.
The seven thousand steps rise past gates and shrines to the summit, while cliffs carved with ancient poems mark the sacred way up Mount Tai.
What is the history of Tai’an?
Tai'an rose at the foot of the holy mountain. Since the dawn of Chinese history men held Mount Tai to be sacred, the place where earth touched Heaven, and the greatest emperors climbed it to make the fengshan sacrifice and proclaim their right to rule. The mountain drew pilgrims for ages.
Priests, poets, and common folk climbed the seven thousand steps to the summit, past temples, gates, and cliffs carved with poems and prayers. The town grew to serve the mountain. At its foot the emperors raised the great Dai Temple, where the climb began, and the town of Tai'an spread around it as a place of inns and shrines for the faithful.
The land itself is ancient. Near the town lay Dawenkou, where a people lived five thousand years ago, and the plains around were the heart of the old state of Lu. The stairway still climbs the peak.

Where is Tai’an?
Tai'an lies on the plain of central Shandong in eastern China, at the foot of Mount Tai. The city sits where the flat farmland meets the great mountain, whose granite peak rises over fifteen hundred metres straight from the plain, in the heart of Shandong. Its granite peak fills the northern sky.

What is the climate of Tai’an?
Tai'an has a dry continental climate. Hot, wet summers and cold, dry winters cross the plain, and the monsoon brings the year's rain in high summer, while the mountain top stays colder and often wrapped in cloud. Snow caps the peak in winter.
