Liugong Island is the pride of Weihai. The green island in the harbour, once the base of the Beiyang Fleet, holds the museum of the eighteen ninety-five war, the emblem of the city, downtown. Old villas line the shore.

What is the history of Weihai?
Weihai guarded the sea approaches. In the late eighteen-hundreds the Qing built a modern navy and based its great Beiyang Fleet at Weihaiwei, in the shelter of Liugong Island. The fleet was lost in battle.
In the winter of eighteen ninety-five a Japanese assault destroyed the fleet in the harbour, a heavy blow to the old empire, and the island keeps a museum of that war. The British held the port for a time. After the war Britain leased Weihaiwei for thirty years, and colonial buildings rose along the shore before the port returned to China.
The coast turned to rest and holiday. In our own age Weihai grew into one of the cleanest and most pleasant coastal cities of the land, its beaches and parks drawing summer crowds, so the town kept its island, its coast, and its history. The sea still guards Liugong.
