What is the history of Belén?
Belén began as a village apart. Its life gathered around the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Belén, the parish church whose name the whole borough took, while the surrounding land stayed farms and market gardens on the plain below the hills. As Medellín pushed west across the river valley, those fields filled with streets and the old settlement was drawn into the growing city as one of its comunas.
The green hill of the Nutibara Sculpture Park, long a landmark above the plain, kept its place as the borough's high point through that change. Later the riverside industry gave way to culture, and the Medellín Museum of Modern Art took over a former mill hall on Belén's northern edge.
