About Aranjuez

Where to stay in Aranjuez

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Aranjuez is a residential comuna rather than a hotel strip. Stay for the museums. Guesthouses and rented flats spread across its hillside blocks, close enough to walk to the San Pedro Cemetery Museum, while the southern edge along the university corridor puts Parque Explora, the Botanical Garden of Medellín and the Planetarium of Medellín within a short ride, and the city centre of La Candelaria sits just downhill. Manrique climbs to the east.

About Aranjuez

What are the main landmarks in Aranjuez?

The San Pedro Cemetery Museum anchors Aranjuez. Its mausoleums double as an open-air gallery. Laid out with marble angels and family vaults that hold generations of Medellín, the grounds now run guided walks and night tours among the sculpture.

Along the district's southern edge, the university corridor gathers Parque Explora, the Botanical Garden of Medellín, the Planetarium of Medellín and, on the Universidad de Antioquia campus, the Museo Entomológico Francisco Luis Gallego and the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia. The Estadio Cincuentenario adds a sports ground. Downtown landmarks lie beyond the district.

What is the history of Aranjuez?

Aranjuez grew as a northern extension of Medellín as the city spread up the valley slopes. Cemetery first, houses after. The San Pedro Cemetery Museum opened on open ground here before the surrounding blocks filled with workshops, tram-era housing and the families that gave the comuna its character.

Later the university corridor along the southern edge drew Parque Explora and the Planetarium of Medellín onto former railway and industrial land. The district kept its residential grain. Manrique rose alongside it on the eastern hills.

Where is Aranjuez?

Aranjuez sits on the northern slopes of Medellín above the central district of La Candelaria, with Manrique climbing the hills to the east and the university corridor of Parque Explora running along its lower southern edge. The streets rise toward Manrique.
