About Santa ElenaWhere to stay in Santa Elena
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Santa Elena keeps a mountain calm above the city. Most visitors sleep down in central Medellín and ride up for the day, yet a night in the corregimiento trades traffic for cloud-forest air, flower plots, and the quiet of the eastern ridge. Beds run scarce here.
The old village core, where the silleteros of the Desfile de Silleteros still tend their gardens, gives the truest sense of this farming district. Higher up, the edge of Parque Arví puts trails and forest a short walk from the door. Stay in the corregimiento when you want cool nights and green; keep a room in Medellín when you want the city fast.
About Santa Elena
What are the main landmarks in Santa Elena?
Santa Elena grows its landmarks. Parque Arví spreads its cloud-forest trails and pre-Hispanic paths across the ridge above Medellín, reached by cable car from the valley floor. The corregimiento is the cradle of the silleteros, the flower farmers whose Desfile de Silleteros carries towering flower arrangements down into the city each Feria de las Flores.
Flowers define the calendar here. Between the farms and the forest, the district gives this corner of Antioquia a name for high gardens and green walks that few other parts of Medellín can match.
What is the history of Santa Elena?
Santa Elena began as a mountain farming settlement above Medellín. Its cool, high ground suited flowers and vegetables, and generations of growers carried their produce down to the city market on wooden frames strapped to their backs, the silletas that gave the silleteros their name. That descent became a parade.
The Desfile de Silleteros grew into the heart of the Feria de las Flores, tying this corregimiento of Antioquia to the wider identity of Medellín. Later the forested heights around the village were drawn together as Parque Arví, protecting the woods and old paths that the farmers had crossed for generations.
