The name Manrique reaches back to Visigothic Iberia. It descends from the Gothic Ermanaric, carried into Spanish as both a given name and a surname before it settled on this stretch of Medellín's eastern hills. The slopes filled house by house.
As Medellín climbed the valley walls, the district took shape around the parish of Iglesia El Calvario, and the Museo Cementerio San Pedro downhill preserved the memory of Antioquia's older families as the newer neighbourhood grew above it.
