About Göppingen

Model trains carry the name.

What is Göppingen known for?

Märklin makes its toys in Göppingen, and the Märklineum and the Märklin Museum both grew out of a single manufacturer that has given the town its best-known name. TeamViewer AG runs from here as well. The Kunsthalle Göppingen, the Jüdisches Museum Göppingen, and MuSeele give the town three collections that owe nothing to the factory floor.

What are the main landmarks in Göppingen?

Two collections of model railways sit here. The Märklin Museum and the Märklineum both come from the same manufacturer, and the Kunsthalle Göppingen, MuSeele, and the Jüdisches Museum Göppingen fill out the museum side of a small town. Churches carry the older weight.

Stadtkirche Göppingen holds the centre, the Oberhofenkirche and the Stiftskirche Faurndau stand apart from it, and the Friedhofskapelle St. Michael is the smallest of them. Tierpark Göppingen and the Luftikus Observation Tower close the list.

What is the history of Göppingen?

Faurndau came first. A Benediktinerkloster stood there before it became the Kollegiatstift Faurndau, and the Stiftskirche Faurndau is what survives of a religious foundation older than the town that later absorbed it. The Oberhofenkirche belongs to that early ground too.

Stadtkirche Göppingen took the centre when the place grew into a town, and the Friedhofskapelle St. Michael and a surviving Pfarrkirche mark the smaller foundations left around it. The Storchen is one of the old houses the centre still carries. Märklin made the modern reputation.

The toy company built its model railways in Göppingen and gave the town a name that reached far past Baden-Württemberg, and the Märklin Museum and the Märklineum both grew from that one business. TeamViewer AG came much later. The Jüdisches Museum Göppingen records a community that belonged to the district's history, while MuSeele takes psychiatry as its subject and the Kunsthalle Göppingen shows contemporary work.

Green ground was set aside as well. Tierpark Göppingen and the Luftikus Observation Tower serve the town outside its collections, and the Stuttgart Region around it kept Göppingen as the capital of its own district. Baden-Württemberg is the state around all of it.

Where is Göppingen?

The Stuttgart Region holds it. Göppingen is the capital of its own district in Baden-Württemberg, with Faurndau taken into the built-up area and the Stiftskirche Faurndau still standing where that older settlement was. A tower reads the ground.

The Luftikus Observation Tower gives the wider view, and Tierpark Göppingen occupies green ground at the edge of the streets where the district begins.

What is the climate of Göppingen?

The seasons here are the inland kind. Göppingen lies in the temperate band, and the difference between a January morning and a July afternoon is wide enough that the Kunsthalle Göppingen and MuSeele do better trade in one half of the year than the other. Snow comes some winters.

Tierpark Göppingen and the climb to the Luftikus Observation Tower both belong to the warmer months, when the outdoor ground of the town is worth the time.

How do you get to Göppingen?

Göppingen sits inside the Stuttgart Region. That puts it on the routes crossing the Stuttgart Region of Baden-Württemberg, and the town's role as its own district capital means local services converge here rather than passing by. The centre walks easily.

Stadtkirche Göppingen, the Kunsthalle Göppingen, and MuSeele are close together, while Faurndau, Tierpark Göppingen, and the Luftikus Observation Tower are the ones worth planning for. Märklin sits in the same town.
