What are the main landmarks in Brand?
The parish of St. Donatus anchors Brand's skyline, and the former Erlöserkirche was reworked into a columbarium in 2015. On the Marktplatz stands the Brander Stier, the bronze bull that became the borough's emblem. Near the Sparkasse on the Trierer Straße, Bonifatius Stirnberg's sculpture Mit Kind und Kegel recalls the horse-racing crowds that once filled the district.
The small Jakobuskapelle rounds out the older religious buildings.
What is the history of Brand?
Brand was a self-governing municipality in the old Landkreis Aachen until it was absorbed into the city in the territorial reform of 1972. Horse racing shaped its nineteenth-century fame, organised around 1830 by the industrialist James Cockerill on the plain toward Freund and Rollef. The Vennbahn arrived in 1883, and the Bahnhof Brand opened two years later.
That line has since become the Vennbahnweg. Rails gave way to cyclists.
Where is Brand?
Brand rises on the hilly south-eastern edge of Aachen, bordering Kornelimünster, Forst, and Eilendorf as well as the town of Stolberg, with the Brander Wald filling the ground toward the Stolberg boundary.
