What are the main landmarks in Eilendorf?

The parish church anchors everything. Sankt Severin rose in 1864 to a neo-Romanesque design by the Cologne architect Heinrich Wiethase, its tall brick tower added over the decades that followed above the rooftops of Eilendorf. The oldest survivor stands close by.

Pannhaus, a former monastic brewery once tied to the abbey of Kornelimünster, still holds its ground, while the small Apolloniakapelle keeps an eighteenth-century vow alive at the edge of the fields. Two later monuments finish the circuit. The Kriegerdenkmal remembers the district's war dead, and the mansion called Villa Thelen shows off the confident brickwork of Eilendorf's mining-era families.

What is the history of Eilendorf?

Records first name Eilendorf in 1238, a farming settlement on the road east out of Aachen. Then zinc changed it. Galmei, the local calamine ore, drew miners onto the hillsides, and dolomite quarries and lime kilns soon followed, turning a village of fields into a place of works and worker housing that pressed toward the Wurm.

Independence ended in 1972. The old commune was joined to Aachen as one of the city's seven districts, and parish life carried on around Sankt Severin much as before.

Where is Eilendorf?

Eilendorf rises on a ridge east of central Aachen, drained by the Haarbach on its way down to the Wurm, with the Wolfsberg lifting above its eastern edge.
