The border is the point of this address. Vaalserquartier sits directly on the line to Vaals in the Netherlands, reached by the B 1 from Aachen and by the N 278 on the Dutch side, with the university hospital close by. Walking country begins nearby.
About a kilometre and a half to the south-west the paths of the Aachener Wald open out around the three-country corner of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Buses run in six directions from here.

What are the main landmarks in Vaalserquartier?
A watchtower survives from the old Aachener Reich. Gut Beeck on the Dreiländerweg has been rebuilt from the ground up but still stands, and the Adlerstein marks the former Kleine Wache border crossing beside it. Earthworks run south-west of the village.
Remains of both the inner and the outer Aachener Landgraben are still traceable there. A chestnut tree joined the national register in 2024. The dicke Esskastanie is reckoned at four hundred and fifty years old, and old farmsteads under protection give the rest of the place its shape.
What is the history of Vaalserquartier?
The name dates from the early fourteenth century. It preserves the old division of the Aachener Reich, under which this ground was one of the seven quarters outside the city wall, and the watchtower Gut Beeck and the Adlerstein survive from that arrangement. A Roman route carried the traffic first.
It branched off what is now the Vaalserstraße, ran through as the Alte Vaalser Straße, passed the Kleine Wache and became the Akerstraat on the Dutch side on its way to Maastricht, until the Maastrichter Laan was finished in 1825. Church business ran through Vaals. St Paulus there served both Vaals and Vaalserquartier as a branch of St Jakob in Aachen until 1804, after which St Jakob took it over until 1951.
One house held the presbytery. Alte Vaalser Straße 88 served the Pauluskirche from the thirteenth century until about 1673, then became a Catholic primary school that lasted to about 1820, and vicars and sextons still lived there until 1907. Aachen took the quarter on 1 January 1972, together with the Laurensberg commune it had belonged to.
