About Rothe Erde
What are the main landmarks in Rothe Erde?
Rothe Erde's church of St. Barbara was consecrated in 1901, and a coat-of-arms plaque on it still recalls the heavy industry that made the district. Badly damaged in 1944 and restored in 1957, it was deconsecrated in 2019. An evangelical free church, Neues Leben, bought it.
The tyre works' former head office was auctioned in 2009. The former Philips works, where e.GO Mobile opened a plant in 2018, is run as the Technopark Aachen.
What is the history of Rothe Erde?
Rothe Erde takes its name from the clearing around the lost hamlet of Röthgen. In 1845 Jacques Piedbœuf founded a steelworks on a former estate here. By 1887 it led Germany's steel output.
Its slag became fertiliser and, after the works closed in 1926, a surface for sports grounds such as Berlin's Olympic Stadium. A tyre maker took over the site in 1929.
