Castelldefels Castle stands over the old core with Santa Maria de Castelldefels beside it, and the two together make the oldest fixed point in the municipality. Water sport came later. The Canal Olímpic de Catalunya laid a still-water course across the low ground of the Baix Llobregat, and the Estadi Municipal la Bòbila and the Camp Municipal de Beisbol Can Torelló fill out the sporting side.

What is the history of Castelldefels?
The record starts underground. Cova del Rinoceront holds remains far older than any building in the Baix Llobregat, and the Parc Arqueològic Mines de Gavà preserves shafts sunk by the earliest miners here. Gavà Museum and the Gavà Mines Archaeological Park present what came out of them.
Then the castle went up. Castelldefels Castle and Santa Maria de Castelldefels fixed the settlement in the medieval centuries, and the farmhouses of Can Baixeres and Can Planas i Crehuet worked the land around. Summer houses remade the town later.
Casa Güell, Casa Comte de Güell, S'Algaida and the Torre de l'American Lake belong to the period when substantial villas went up here, and Casa Guiu, Casa Ferrando and Casa de les Plomes joined them along the streets behind Carrer Sant Isidre. Growth then filled the gaps. Castelldefels became a suburban town of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, its houses spreading across ground that had carried little more than fields, and Bellamar took shape with the Església de Santa Eulàlia at its centre.
Sport arrived with the water. The Canal Olímpic de Catalunya gave the municipality a competition course, and the Estadi Municipal la Bòbila and the Camp Municipal de Beisbol Can Torelló followed on the same open ground.

Just under 13 square kilometres make up the municipality. Castelldefels lies in the Baix Llobregat comarca of the province of Barcelona, a compact municipality with Gavà close alongside and the built-up Metropolitan Area of Barcelona continuing beyond. Open land survives at the Canal Olímpic.
The course, the Cova del Rinoceront and the fields toward the Parc Arqueològic Mines de Gavà account for most of what is not built on.
