About Hovinsaari
What are the main landmarks in Hovinsaari?
Hovinsaari is the cultural waterfront of Kotka. The Merikeskus Vellamo dominates the quay, a maritime centre that houses both the Suomen merimuseo and the Kymenlaakson museo, and beside it the museum icebreaker Jäänmurtaja Tarmo lies moored as a floating exhibit. Two more ships keep it company.
Alongside wait the lightship Majakkalaiva Kemi and the pilot cutter Luotsikutteri Pitkäpaasi, rounding out the fleet on display. There is more than ships here. The Kotkan kirkko stands among the streets, and the Haukkavuoren näkötorni rises on the heights for views over the harbour and the islands.
Along the shore runs the Kotkan veistospromenadi, a sculpture walk threading the waterfront. Few districts pack so much in. From museum quay to lookout tower, Hovinsaari carries much of what brings visitors to Kotka.
What is the history of Hovinsaari?
Hovinsaari grew with the harbour of Kotka. The city was chartered in 1879 as a sawmill and export port, and the working waterfront here later turned to culture as the Merikeskus Vellamo rose to gather the Suomen merimuseo and the Kymenlaakson museo under one roof. The quays found a second life.
Ships became exhibits.
Where is Hovinsaari?
Hovinsaari lies in eastern Kotka, on the waterfront beside the harbour-island core of Kotkansaari. The district of Halla sits just to the east, with Korela and the fortress ground of Kyminlinna inland to the north-west, all within the same port on the coast of south-eastern Finland. The water frames it.
