Karhuvuori, Kotka — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Ruonalan kirkko is the landmark of Karhuvuori, a parish church serving this western side of Kotka. The district keeps few other sights of its own. The maritime museums and the harbour promenade that draw visitors gather on Kotkansaari, the central island to the south-east, rather than out here on the mainland.

Karhuvuori took shape as Kotka grew outward from its island core. The district belongs to the mainland housing that filled in west of Kotkansaari, part of the city's later spread across the Kymenlaakso shore rather than its first harbour streets. Ruonalan kirkko anchors this western quarter.

Karhuvuori sits in western Kotka. The district lies on the mainland, set back from the Gulf of Finland coast that the port city fronts in south-eastern Finland, north-west of Kotkansaari, the central island where the harbour and old core gather. Mussalo reaches toward the sea to its south. Around it the Kymenlaakso region spreads inland.
