About Kyminlinna

What are the main landmarks in Kyminlinna?

Kyminlinna itself is the landmark. The old fortress gives the district both its name and its draw, ramparts on the mainland edge of Kotka. Beyond it, the city's museums and harbour cluster on Kotkansaari to the south-east, with Hovinsaari between.

The fort is the sight here.

What is the history of Kyminlinna?

Kyminlinna takes its name from the fortress that stands here. This bastioned earthwork long pre-dates the city of Kotka, which was chartered only in 1879 as a sawmill and export port on the islands to the south, and for generations the fort marked this northern edge of what would become the modern city. It still stands.

Around it the district grew.

Where is Kyminlinna?

Kyminlinna sits in north-western Kotka. It holds the mainland north of the harbour island of Kotkansaari, with the neighbouring district of Korela close by, Metsola off to the south-west, and Hovinsaari and the city centre to the south-east, all within the same port on the coast of south-eastern Finland. Korela borders it.
