Mussalo keeps few sights of its own. Its character is seaward and residential on the western edge of Kotka. The maritime museums and the harbour promenade that pull visitors gather on Kotkansaari, the central island to the east, rather than out here by the Gulf of Finland.

Mussalo lies in western Kotka. The district sits on the seaward edge of this port city in south-eastern Finland, reaching south toward the Gulf of Finland, with Karhuvuori on the mainland to its north and the central island of Kotkansaari off to the east. It marks the city's western flank.

The open water lies just beyond.
