Cronenbourg's history is bound to the city it joined. Strasbourg began as Argentoratum, a Roman garrison on the Rhine plain, and grew into a free imperial city clustered on the island called the Grande Île. Cronenbourg lay outside all this. The village was folded into Strasbourg only as the city pushed outward across the plain.
