What is the history of Cronenbourg?
Cronenbourg's history is bound to the city it joined. Strasbourg began as Argentoratum, a Roman garrison on the Rhine plain, and grew into a free imperial city clustered on the island called the Grande Île. The churches that mark that island, Saint Thomas Church and the Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune Protestant Church among them, carry the traces of the Reformation that split the city's faith.
Cronenbourg lay outside all this. The village was folded into Strasbourg only as the city pushed outward across the plain.

Cronenbourg spreads across the northwest of Strasbourg, inland from the river-ringed center. It is flat ground. Hautepierre adjoins it to the west, while the island core of the Grande Île, with the old streets of Petite France at its western edge, lies to the southeast. Rail lines and open land separate the quarter from that historic town.
