Sport and woodland define it: the forêt du Neuhof spreads along its eastern side and the Stade de la Meinau stands just to the north. This is not the tourist Strasbourg of canals and cathedrals.

It is a residential quarter of housing estates and quiet streets rather than a hotel district, and most of Strasbourg's beds sit in the centre around the Grande Île. Staying out here makes sense mainly for a match at the Stade de la Meinau, just to the north, or for walkers drawn to the forêt du Neuhof on the district's eastern side.
The mood is local and low-key, a long way from the crowds of the old town. For canals, cathedral and evening life, base yourself in central Strasbourg instead.

Neuhof grew up as a southern outlier of Strasbourg, well apart from the walled city on its island. The name is German. It points to Alsace's long German-speaking past, in a region that changed hands repeatedly between France and Germany, and the suburb was eventually drawn into the expanding city and grouped administratively with Stockfeld and Ganzau.
Its mix of Protestant and Catholic churches, from the église protestante du Neuhof to the église Saint-Ignace de Strasbourg, reflects the shared-confession tradition typical of Alsace. Much of its present shape came later, with large housing estates laid out on the southern flats.

Neuhof occupies the southern edge of Strasbourg, well beyond the island city centre. Meinau lies immediately north. Neudorf continues from there back toward the historic core, while to the east the forêt du Neuhof stretches toward the Rhine plain and gives the district a long wooded flank. Stockfeld and Ganzau adjoin it, the three grouped into a single administrative district.
