What are the main landmarks in Grande Île?
The Palais Rohan gathers three collections under one roof: the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg, the Musée archéologique de Strasbourg, and the Musée des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg. Beside the cathedral, the Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame holds its original medieval statuary, while the Musée alsacien and the Strasbourg Historical Museum line the quays of the Ill. Churches mark the island's skyline.
Saint Thomas Church, Temple Neuf, and Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune Protestant Church stand among the medieval lanes, and Saint William's Church closes the eastern end. Under the streets lies Argentoratum, the Roman camp from which the city grew.
What is the history of Grande Île?
The island began as Argentoratum, the Roman garrison set on dry ground between the arms of the Ill. A medieval town grew over that core. Parish churches and merchant houses filled the ground within the water, and the Canal du Faux-Rempart, a canalised arm of the Ill, fixed the island's outline while serving as its defence.
The quarter kept its medieval street plan through the centuries. In 1988 the whole island became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first entire city centre to receive the listing.
Where is Grande Île?
The island lies at the centre of Strasbourg, in the Grand Est region of eastern France. Water surrounds it entirely. The Ill river runs along the southern and eastern flank, and the Canal du Faux-Rempart, a canalised arm of the same river, seals the northern side to form a complete loop.
Its western tip narrows into the Petite France quarter, and the Neustadt lies across the canal to the north-east.
