What is the history of Wacken?
The Wacken was long an expanse of low meadow and floodplain on the northern skirts of Strasbourg, well outside the fortified core on the Grande Île. Building came late. Through the twentieth century the open land was turned over to exhibition grounds, sports fields, and eventually the Rhenus Sport arena.
After the Council of Europe was founded in 1949 and chose Strasbourg as its seat, the European institutions grew up on this northern edge, and the former meadow became a quarter of assembly halls and offices.
Where is Wacken?
The quarter sits north of Strasbourg's Neustadt and stretches toward Robertsau along the water. To the south, bridges cross to the Grande Île and the older core of the city. Its ground was once low river meadow, and open space still shapes it, exhibition halls, sports grounds, and the Rhenus Sport arena.
