Two churches frame the quarter on the island side: Saint Thomas Church, with its great organ, and Old Saint Peter's Church at the western gate. Look across the southern arm of the Ill to reach the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. A walk east along the quays leads to Saint-Nicolas Church and the Musée alsacien, a museum of regional life set in old townhouses.
Most sights sit within ten minutes on foot. The whole island is UNESCO-listed.
What is the history of Petite France?
The quarter's name goes back to a hospital opened here at the close of the fifteenth century for sufferers of the so-called French disease, and the label stuck to the whole district. A working quarter grew around it. Tanners, millers and fishermen crowded the channels of the Ill, whose current powered their mills and rinsed their hides.
Their timber-framed houses still stand. Steep roofs and open lofts once let the tanners dry skins above the water, and after the trade faded, restoration turned the workshops into homes and small hotels within the Grande Île's protected core.
Where is Petite France?
The quarter caps the western tip of the Grande Île, wrapped on almost every side by arms of the Ill. Old Saint Peter's Church marks its landward edge, the point where the quarter rejoins the wider island. Across the southern channel stands the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
