Robertsau grew up as a village of market gardeners on the damp lowlands north of walled Strasbourg. The gardens came first. Because Alsace passed repeatedly between France and Germany, the quarter still carries its older German name, Ruprechtsau, beside the French one.
Its low ground, threaded by the Ill and the Rhine's side-channels, kept it rural long after the walled city filled up. The Catholic parish gathered around église Saint-Louis de la Robertsau as the population settled.
