About Folie Méricourt
What are the main landmarks in Folie Méricourt?
The Cirque d'Hiver stands in the quartier. So do the théâtre de Belleville, once the théâtre du Tambour royal, and the église Saint-Joseph-des-Nations. Outside it, the church of Saint-Ambroise stands 650 m south-east, and the Musée Picasso and the Musée Carnavalet are about a kilometre south-west, toward the Marais.
What is the history of Folie Méricourt?
Its western part, between the boulevard du Temple and the rue de la Folie-Méricourt, was the marais du Temple in the Middle Ages, market gardens of the Order of the Temple on a meander of a prehistoric arm of the Seine. The quartier stayed rural. Building began only in the 1780s, with the Nouvelle Ville d'Angoulême, and the quartier grew after the Canal Saint-Martin opened in 1826, a canal covered around 1860 to make the boulevard Richard-Lenoir.
Metal workshops filled its passages and courtyards until the middle of the 20th century. Since the 1960s it has drawn many immigrants, notably of Turkish and North African origin.
