What is the history of Porte Saint-Denis?
Charles V's wall came first. The gate at this crossing belonged to that circuit, one of the former city walls of Paris, and the monument that replaced it was raised in 1672 once the defensive line had lost its work. The name outlived the stone.
Rue Saint-Denis still runs through the site, continued past it by the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, and the quartier around the arch took the gate's name for its own.
