Hotel beds in Ma On Shan are few. The new town was built as housing, so the rooms that exist sit among estate blocks that step back from the shore of Tolo Harbour rather than along any hotel strip. A base near Ma On Shan Sports Centre keeps the water on one side and the peaks on the other. Sha Tin holds the nearer hotel stock, south-west along the same coast. Wu Kai Sha marks the quiet end.

What are the main landmarks in Ma On Shan?
The peaks give the district its name. Ma On Shan rises in twin summits that stand partly inside the town, so the ridge closes the inland view from streets that would otherwise face only blocks. Two public sports halls stand among the housing: Ma On Shan Sports Centre and Heng On Sports Centre.
Tolo Harbour draws the other edge, with Tai Po on the far side of the water.
What is the history of Ma On Shan?
The name came down from the hills. Ma On Shan is a planned new town, and the twin peaks above it carried that name long before the shore below was laid out for housing in the New Territories. Building work reached the water's edge, and the town runs north-east toward Wu Kai Sha and south-west toward Sha Tin.
