Girnar towers to the east. Out toward Girnar and Gir, the town gives way to the temple steps, the forest road, and the lion country to the south. A room out of town trades the streets for the mountain paths, the quiet forest, and the road to the lions of Gir.

What is the history of Jūnāgadh?
Junagadh is old beyond memory. Its very name means the old fort, and on a great rock outside the town the emperor Ashoka carved his edicts more than two thousand years ago. The Uparkot fort held the city.
Behind high walls the ancient citadel guarded Junagadh through the ages, with rock-cut caves and deep step-wells sunk within it, held in turn by Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim rulers. The nawabs and the mountain marked the town. Its Muslim nawabs raised a wild and lovely mausoleum, the Mahabat Maqbara, its minarets wound with spiral stairs, while above the town the temples of Girnar drew pilgrims up thousands of steps.
The lions came to the town's care. In the Gir forest to the south lived the last wild lions of Asia, and Junagadh's great zoo bred them from the edge of loss, so the city kept its fort, its mountain, and its lions. The pilgrims still climb Girnar.

Junagadh lies in the Saurashtra of Gujarat in western India, on the road and rail from Rajkot. Trains and the highway run to it across Saurashtra from Rajkot, and roads lead south to Gir and the coast. Pilgrims crowd the Girnar road.
