Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Two choices, and they differ. The old city sits inside what survives of the Māndvi Fort wall, walkable end to end and close to the yards where dhows take shape, which is where a visitor with an interest in the working town should sleep. The beach lies apart from that.
It carries the leisure side, the stretch the Maharao of the Cutch State used as a summer retreat, and a room there trades the sound of the yards for open sand. Kachchh district is thin on alternatives. Māndvi is the obvious base for this coast, and anyone moving on into Kutch will find the town better supplied than the settlements behind it, which matters more in this district than in most.
The fort wall is a fragment now rather than a circuit, so staying inside it means the old street pattern instead of a defended edge. Book ahead in the cool months. If you want the shipbuilding, stay near the water and go early, because the yards are a working industry rather than an exhibit.

Four centuries of yard work put wooden dhows into the water here, and those hulls became the instrument of a trade that reached far past the Gujarat coast. Zanzibar is where that reach shows clearest. Merchants of the Kutchi Bhatia community, among them Jivandas Damodar Tulsidas and the firm of Damodar Tulsidas, worked as financier-merchants there, extending credit to clove plantation owners and funding caravan trade into the African interior.
The firms outlasted regimes. Through the shift from the Omani Sultanate's rule to a British colonial protectorate the Bhatia houses held their place as intermediaries in cloves, ivory, and imported textiles, and the dhows built at Māndvi remained the vessels that kept the link to the Zanzibar archipelago open. The maritime expertise was the town's contribution.
Kachchh district holds it now within the Indian state of Gujarat, and the port begun in 1580 still fixes what the place is known for.
