What is the history of Baharampur?
This was the country of the Nawabs of Bengal. Just upstream at Murshidabad the rulers of Bengal kept their court in the days before the British, in palaces and mosques by the river, until the East India Company won the land at the battle of Plassey nearby. The Nawabs lost the country.
After Plassey the Company took Bengal, and the old capital slowly faded as the power passed to Calcutta downstream. Baharampur rose as the Company's great cantonment. The British built a huge army station on the river below Murshidabad, with barracks around a vast square, a residency, and churches for its soldiers.
The mutiny first stirred here. It was at Berhampore in early 1857 that Indian troops first refused the new cartridges, a spark before the great revolt, and the town kept its barracks and its memories through the years that followed. The old square still lies by the river.
