Where to stay in Baranagar

Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.

Baranagar is a place to visit from a bed somewhere else. Hotels inside the municipality are few, so the choice falls between three nearby bases. Dakshineswar, just upriver by the Kali temple, has guest-house rooms, and the Blue Line of the Kolkata Metro joins it to Baranagar.

Jessore Road suits an early flight. Its hotels line the way to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, about eight kilometres to the east past Dum Dum. Central Kolkata holds the widest choice of rooms, and the same metro line runs north from the city centre to the Baranagar and Noapara stations.

About Baranagar

Statistics is the surprise.

What is Baranagar known for?

The Indian Statistical Institute, founded by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, has its headquarters at Bonhooghly, and an act of parliament in 1959 made it an institution of national importance. Its campus keeps a geology museum with a replica skeleton of the dinosaur Barapasaurus, open by appointment, and a museum in the house where Mahalanobis lived. The Ramakrishna movement is the other thread.

Baranagar Math is where Swami Vivekananda and fellow disciples began living together after the death of Ramakrishna in 1886, and the town turns out in force for Durga Puja and Kali Puja.

What are the main landmarks in Baranagar?

Monasteries come first. Baranagar Math and Alambazar Math are the two early houses of the Ramakrishna order, and Alambazar Math is where Swami Vivekananda first stayed on his return from abroad. The Kripamayee Kali Temple, also called Joy Mitra Kalibari, is a nine-spired temple with twelve shrines to Shiva.

Pathbari Temple marks the place where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is said to have stopped on his way to Puri. Kuthi Ghat keeps the Dutch Kuthi, a seventeenth-century merchants' house on the river, and the Dakshineswar Kali Temple stands about two kilometres upstream.

What is the history of Baranagar?

The name may mean city of the hogs. Streynsham Master, visiting in 1676, described a factory here that slaughtered and salted some three thousand hogs a year for export, and Dutch merchants kept houses by the river in the same century. Tradition goes back further, to a visit by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in 1512.

Jute made the modern town. A sugar mill near Alambazar gave way to the Borneo Jute Factory, renamed the Baranagar Jute Factory in 1859 and counted as the first mechanical jute mill in India, and engineering works followed in the two World Wars. Civic government came in 1869 with the North Suburban Municipality, which was split in 1881 to leave Baranagar a municipality of its own.

After the death of Ramakrishna in 1886 his disciples set up their first monastery here, before the order settled across the river at Belur Math.

Where is Baranagar?

Baranagar lies on the east bank of the Hooghly River, north of Kolkata, at about 12 metres above sea level. Dakshineswar bounds it on the north, Noapara and South Dum Dum on the east, and Sinthee and Cossipore, both in Kolkata, on the south. It is small.

The municipality covers 7.12 square kilometres in the Barrackpore subdivision of North 24 Parganas district.

How do you get to Baranagar?

Two stations on the Blue Line of the Kolkata Metro serve the city: Noapara, reached by the line in 2013, and Baranagar, opened in 2021 beside the Baranagar Road railway station on the Sealdah to Dankuni line. Barrackpore Trunk Road and the Belghoria Expressway pass through, and Dunlop Crossing links the town with Howrah across the river. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is about eight kilometres to the east.
