What is the history of Bishnupur?
Bishnupur was the capital of the Malla kings. For centuries the Malla rajas ruled this corner of Bengal from the town, and in their golden age, some four hundred years ago, they built a great line of brick temples on the plain. Terracotta told the old tales.
Since good stone was scarce, the builders faced their temples in carved terracotta, panel on panel of gods, kings, and battles pressed into the clay. The kings loved music and art as well. Under the Malla court the Bishnupur school of classical singing was born, and it lives on in the town, while the rajas cast a huge cannon, the Dalmadal, to guard their walls.
In time the kingdom faded. The Malla line lost its power under later rulers, and the court fell quiet, but the temples, the cannon, and the music endured. The terracotta temples still stand on the plain.
