What is the history of Navadwīp?
Navadwīp was a seat of learning before it became holy. Long ago it stood as a capital of the kings of Bengal, and it grew into a great town of Sanskrit scholars, where the sharp logic of the Navya-Nyaya school was taught to students from across the land. Then a saint was born here.
In 1486 Chaitanya came into the world on these riverbanks, and as a young man he turned from learning to love of the divine, and began to sing and dance the holy names in the streets. His song changed the faith of Bengal. Chaitanya taught that the name of God, sung together in kirtan, could carry the soul to grace, and his followers spread the Vaishnava way across the east and beyond.
The town became a place of pilgrimage. Temples rose along the river, the faithful came to walk the holy ground, and in time the great shrine of Mayapur grew across the water. The chanting still fills the nights.
