Baggio began as a farming village on the plain west of Milan, long a separate community before the growing city absorbed it. Parish life centred on Saint George Church, while the nearby hamlet of Muggiano kept its own place of worship at Saint Marcellina in Muggiano Church. Rows of courtyard houses, among them Casa Garavaglia and Casa Bonora, recall that agricultural past.
The name is also tied to Sant'Anselmo da Baggio, a medieval bishop remembered in the church that bears his name. Farming shaped it first.
