About San Siro
What are the main landmarks in San Siro?
The Giuseppe Meazza stadium, once known as the Stadio San Siro, is the home ground of Inter and Milan. Racecourses for trotting and galloping lie in the district too. The Palasport stood beside the stadium until 1985, when an exceptional snowfall destroyed it, and on 27 May 2016 the Giacinto Facchetti and Cesare Maldini garden opened behind the stadium on Via Tesio.
What is the history of San Siro?
Until the 19th century San Siro was a small farming village on the Olona, centred near the present Piazzale Lotto. It took its name from the church of San Siro alla Vepra, first recorded in 880 and probably dedicated to the first bishop of Pavia. Its apse survives near Via Masaccio.
In Habsburg times the village belonged to the Corpi Santi, joined to Milan in 1873, and the San Siro public housing estate, the quadrilatero around Piazzale Selinunte, was planned in the 1930s.
Where is San Siro?
San Siro lies on the western periphery of Milan, about 5 kilometres north-west of the city centre. It borders Lampugnano and QT8 to the north, the former Fiera to the east, and Trenno to the west, with Via Novara and Via Rembrandt along its southern side. The outer ring road crosses it.
