About Brera
What are the main landmarks in Brera?
The district's anchor is the Pinacoteca di Brera, whose galleries hold Renaissance and Baroque painting. The Brera Astronomical Observatory shares its courtyard. A short walk off stands the Basilica of San Simpliciano, one of the old Ambrosian churches of Milan, while Sforza Castle closes the western side with its brick towers and museum courtyards.
Head south and the sights of the centre line up quickly: Milan Cathedral, the Museo Teatrale alla Scala beside the opera house, the Gallerie d'Italia, Milano on the same square, and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli off Via Manzoni.
What is the history of Brera?
The name Brera comes from the palace-and-college complex that still anchors the streets around it. Under Habsburg and then Napoleonic rule the complex was turned into public institutions: the Brera Astronomical Observatory was founded there in 1764, and the Pinacoteca di Brera opened as a public gallery in 1809. Older than both is the Basilica of San Simpliciano, one of Milan's early Christian basilicas.
Studios grew up around it. Through the 1800s and 1900s the lanes filled with painters and students, and the quarter settled into its role as the art district of Milan.
Where is Brera?
The neighborhood fills a wedge of central Milan just north of the streets around Milan Cathedral. Sforza Castle guards its western edge. Its spine is Via Brera, the street that runs past the Pinacoteca di Brera and hands the whole quartiere its name, while Via Manzoni and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli mark the eastern side.
Southward, the blocks give way to La Scala and the Museo Teatrale alla Scala.
