Calvairate is a residential quartiere in southeastern Milan, in the Lombardia region. It began as farmland beyond the walls. The neighborhood is best known for a large early twentieth-century public-housing estate that fills much of its street grid, built as Milan expanded eastward. The Milan Cathedral and the churches around Porta Vittoria lie a short way to the northwest.

Calvairate is not really a sightseeing base. It is a working residential quarter with little hotel stock, so most visitors book a room nearer the center and ride the tram out to it. The closest monuments cluster around Porta Vittoria to the northwest.
There, Santa Maria della Passione and San Pietro in Gessate mark the old edge of town, with the Milan Cathedral and the Royal Palace of Milan deeper in the core. The quarter suits a longer, quieter stay; a first trip to Milan is better based closer in.

Calvairate itself keeps almost no monuments. Its listed sights are really central Milan's, and the nearest gather around Porta Vittoria, where Santa Maria della Passione and San Pietro in Gessate stand by the old gate. Deeper in the core rise the Milan Cathedral, the Royal Palace of Milan, and the Torre Velasca.
Its museums stretch from the Museo del Novecento and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli to the Museo Teatrale alla Scala and the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum. Old basilicas such as San Nazaro in Brolo and San Fedele Church fill the blocks between.
What is the history of Calvairate?
Calvairate grew from farmland and a handful of cascine, the walled farmsteads that ringed Milan. Through the early twentieth century, as the city pushed east past its old gates, those fields were parcelled out and built over for workers arriving from the countryside. Its name survives from one of them.
Much of the quarter then took the form of public housing, laid out by a housing authority in long courtyard blocks. That estate left it denser and plainer than the monumental core around the Milan Cathedral.
Where is Calvairate?
Calvairate lies in Milan's southeastern belt, outside the inner ring of the historic center. Porta Vittoria borders it to the northwest, on the road in toward the Milan Cathedral, while the Ortomercato produce market spreads across the flat ground to the east. The center is about two kilometres away.
Within the quarter the streets run in a regular grid of low apartment blocks rather than a medieval tangle.
