At the centre stand Milan Cathedral, the Royal Palace of Milan beside it and the twentieth-century collection of the Museo del Novecento. A few steps north lie the opera collection of the Museo Teatrale alla Scala and two picture houses, the Gallerie d'Italia and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli. The Sforza Castle anchors the western reach, near the Triennale di Milano and Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Brera holds its own trio: the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Brera Astronomical Observatory and the Basilica of San Simpliciano. Older still are the paleochristian churches, among them the Basilica of San Lorenzo with its Roman columns, San Nazaro in Brolo and the ossuary chapel of San Bernardino alle Ossa. Torre Velasca towers over them.
What is the history of Municipio 1?
Municipio 1 covers old Roman Mediolanum. The Archaeological Museum of Milan still guards fragments of that first city, and Christian Milan later rose over it, leaving two paleochristian basilicas, San Lorenzo and San Simpliciano. In the Middle Ages the city crowned its centre with the marble Gothic mass of Milan Cathedral.
Under the Sforza dukes the district gained the Sforza Castle, and the friars of Santa Maria delle Grazie commissioned the refectory wall that Leonardo da Vinci painted. Later centuries added the Royal Palace of Milan and, in the modern age, the concrete profile of the Torre Velasca.
Where is Municipio 1?
The district sits at the dead centre of Milan, bounded roughly by the ring road that traces the line of the former city walls. Milan Cathedral stands at its heart, with the Sforza Castle closing off the northwestern corner and the Basilica of San Lorenzo marking the southern edge with its row of Roman columns. Brera sits just to the north.
To the east, the district runs up to the public gardens that hold the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano.
