Lambrate grew from a village on the river Lambro, east of the old walls of Milan, and it takes its name from that water. Its parish formed around the church of Saint Martin in Lambrate. For a long time it stood apart, a farming and milling settlement on the river.
Then the city came east. As Milan pushed its factories and rail lines outward, the village was absorbed and lost its separate standing, though the Lambro still marks the district's eastern side.

Lambrate lies east of central Milan, on the near bank of the river Lambro, which traces the district's eastern boundary. To the west it runs up against Città Studi, the university quarter. The smaller Ortica quarter sits just to the south, near the rail lines, while the redeveloped blocks of Rubattino stretch eastward across the old industrial belt.
