Walkers have Haagse Bos on the doorstep of the old centre. The wood has been open to the public since 1924, and open-air concerts are held in summer on the Walther Boerweide, where the bandmaster Walther Boer gave weekly concerts from that year. HTM line 23 runs straight through along the Laan van Nieuw Oost Indië, and regional buses stop on the Benoordenhoutseweg, the Boslaan, and the Bezuidenhoutseweg.

About Haagse Bos
What are the main landmarks in Haagse Bos?
Huis ten Bosch, begun in 1645 as a summer house for Frederik Hendrik and Amalia van Solms, stands in the wood. Daniel Marot added two wings for Stadholder William IV. King Willem-Alexander has lived there since its renovation ended in 2019.
Surveyor Ary van der Spuy dug the first ponds in 1821, the great pond followed in 1835, and since 2004 storks, the city's heraldic bird, nest in the Koekamp.
What is the history of Haagse Bos?
The wood is what remains of a forest that ran along the coast from 's-Gravenzande to Alkmaar. The counts of Holland hunted here and built the residence that became the Binnenhof. In 1571 a sixth of the oaks were felled for defences against Spain, and on 16 April 1576 William of Orange signed the Act of Redemption, forbidding its sale for felling.
Staatsbosbeheer took it over in 1899. German forces cut half of it down in the Second World War and fired V-2 rockets from it.
Where is Haagse Bos?
Haagse Bos reaches from the old city centre in the south-west to the border of Wassenaar in the north-east, about 100 hectares from the Malieveld to the Reigersbergen estate. It borders Mariahoeve and Marlot, Bezuidenhout, Benoordenhout, Stationsbuurt, and the Centrum. The wood stands on an old beach ridge.
The A12 cuts it off from the Malieveld and the Koekamp.
