Segbroek, The Hague — Area Guide & Where to Stay
Segbroek is one of the eight districts of The Hague, on the western side of the city. It dates from 1988. The city drew its boundaries around five older residential quarters, among them Regentessekwartier, Valkenboskwartier and Vogelwijk. Laan van Meerdervoort, one of the longest avenues in the Netherlands, runs its full length, and the museum cluster around Kunstmuseum Den Haag sits along the northern edge.

Segbroek is mostly residential, and hotel beds are thin on the ground. What it offers instead is a quiet base among tree-lined streets, within a short tram ride of the museum quarter around Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Fotomuseum Den Haag. Trams along Laan van Meerdervoort reach the city centre in minutes and carry on to Scheveningen beach.
The Vogelwijk, a garden village by the dunes, suits calm over nightlife. Beds are few. For a wider choice, look to central The Hague or the seafront at Scheveningen.

Segbroek and its fringes hold a run of museums. Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the district's largest, anchors the northern edge with its sculpture garden, and Fotomuseum Den Haag shares the same building. The Mesdag Collection, Sound and Vision The Hague and the Dutch Museum of Freemasonry lie a little further off, reached along Laan van Meerdervoort.
Churches mark the residential grid. Elandstraatkerk, Maranathakerk and Bethlehemkerk stand among them. Inside the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery stands the ruined Kerk van Eikenduinen, and Houtrust closes the district off to the west.
What is the history of Segbroek?
As an administrative unit, Segbroek is young. The city drew it up in 1988 from five quarters that had grown up separately, mostly in the early twentieth century as The Hague spread west across former polder land. The Vogelwijk came as a planned garden village near the dunes, its streets named after birds.
Far older is the ground at Oud Eik en Duinen, where the ruined Kerk van Eikenduinen marks a medieval chapel that long predates the houses around it. Churches followed the growth, Elandstraatkerk among the first.
Where is Segbroek?
Segbroek lies west of the centre of The Hague, with Scheveningen to the north and Loosduinen to the southwest. Laan van Meerdervoort is its spine, running from the edge of the city centre out toward the coast and tying the five neighbourhoods together. The Vogelwijk and Bomen- en Bloemenbuurt sit at the western end, closest to the dunes.
Houtrust sits on the boundary with Scheveningen.
